On Wednesday, the Supreme Economic Committee of the Southern Transitional Council held a scientific lecture in the capital, Aden, entitled "Earthquakes and Volcanoes in the World," delivered by Dr. Mohammad Ali Matash, Chairperson of the Committee.
Dr. Matash pointed out that the south is located in what is called the Arabian Plate, which has three types of meeting boundaries with other plates, including them to the south, where they diverge from the African plate forming the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, so the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden open up at an amount of one cm per year.
Dr. Matash stressed that seismic risks in the north of the Arabian Peninsula, where the borders with Iran and Turkey are considered more severe, explaining the reasons for this because the south is located on divergent plates that open up and move away from Africa, which makes the risk of earthquakes less, while volcanic activity is more predictable.
The lecture witnessed an introduction to earthquakes and volcanoes, their types, causes of their occurrence, extent of their destruction, ways to reduce their impact, emergency handling during their occurrence, how earthquakes affect buildings, as well as listening to questions and inquiries from those present.
